THE MEDALEN RANCH
BROODMARE BAND
The Medalen Ranch broodmare band has been cultivated since 1969, starting with Nikki's parents, Chuck and Margaret Leonard. When her dad passed away in 2000, those mares were added to the small group of mares that Nikki owned at the time. Over the past 25 years we have focused on keeping fillies that are out of the most productive mares whose offspring have proven to be solid ranch, rope and riding horses. We aim to produce colts with great dispositions, structurally sound, and versatility to do whatever is asked of them. Many have been successful arena horses as roping, barrel, all-around rodeo and show horses; but we enjoy hearing feedback about those that are ridden for ranch, trail and pure enjoyment just as much. We currently breed about 15 mares each year with the goal of selling most of the babies private treaty. We occasionally keep a few to ride ourselves before they enter the broodmare band or to sell as aged horses.

Mattie was first a very handy ranch horse, heel horse, and then a tremendous broodmare. Her sire Zan Par Four was a promising young stallion that we lost at just 4 years of age, but in his first two foal crops he gave us some outstanding producers and Mattie tops the short list. Her offspring include ranch horses, AQHA Ranch Horse World Show Qualifiers and Versatility Ranch Horse Champions.

Chessa is our only daughter of Hickory Jacks Bay, a.k.a. "HJ", an own son of AQHA Champion, Twist Your Eyes. We stood HJ for several years, but he was a half sibling to most of our mares at the time, so we underutilized him to say the least. Chessa has been a very consistent mare and we wish we had 10 more just like her. She has produced ranch and show horses, including Dakota 50/50 top 10. We have owned every single mare in her maternal pedigree - this has been an outstanding mare family for us and we are very happy to have retained a daughter to replace her. Nikki is also currently riding a young mare out of her.

"Queenie" is by Mister Tackadial and out of one of the matrons of our herd, KNM Cheseapek Bay. This is another mare where we have owned all of the mares in her maternal line for 5+ generations. Her foals are correct, well-balanced and have great dispositions.

We call this mare "Robin". We acquired her in 2016 so that we could put more daughters of Playboys Blue Pine in our herd. She has crossed very well on Mr Blue Tailwind, and has been a consistent producer of intelligent, quick footed, well-balanced athletes.

The Mister Tackadial daughters cross extremely well on our current stallions. Tess is a 14-2 hand mare who is not the most impressive mare in the band, but she never fails to have an outstanding foal. Her maternal grandsire, Twist Your Eyes, was not only a great arena horse and AQHA Champion, he was a tremendous sire of broodmares and this has been passed on through Tess.

Darby was sold as a baby in the Dakota 50/50 sale to long time client, Katie Oakland, and was shown in the 2008 Futurity by Katie's sister, Greta. Life changes put Darby on the market and we were able to purchase her back in 2010. She was shown in the 2012 Dakota 50/50 Maturity and finished 3rd. She then became Nikki's main ranch horse and heel horse for the next few years until she was retired to domestic duty. She crosses well on both of our stallions, and her foals have all gone on to be great ranch horses.

Penny was the very first foal we got out of Playboy's Blue Pine and it sure made us want more! She is a solid ranch horse, and was one of our main ranch horses from 2018-2022, when we decided we needed her in the broodmare band. Penny is a character and loved to pick on Chalupa, our donkey, until one day he had enough and took a big bite out of her left ear. She foaled her first in 2023 and we couldn't be happier with the result.

Shez Salty Fast was purchased in 2022. She has produced a filly, Hasta Cash Fast, who earned her Race ROM and $9106 on the track. She was in foal to Ima Baron Buck when we purchased her and produced a beautiful blue roan filly that we expect to see in the barrel racings as she matures. We hope to use "Salty" to produce a stud colt that we can use who will be unrelated to most of our broodmare band and will add some speed into our mostly cow-bred program.

EC Paddys Sugar Bars was purchased in 2022 as an open mare. We bred her to High On Corona, hoping for a stallion prospect, that would be unrelated to the bulk of our broodmare band, but it turned out to be a filly. In 2023, we bred her to Slick by Design, and had the same goal, and outcome. This mare has a pedigree and conformation that we feel is very complimentary to our program.

KNM Roux Royale is the last foal from the mare my dad gave to me when he passed away, Deacon Jan, who he considered his best mare. At two years of age, when sent to a Bryan Domier to be started under saddle, his then 8 year old daughter, Teagan, and Roux just clicked. We then leased Roux to Teagan and the team was fierce running barrels and poles in NBHA and Pro Elite World Challenge Barrel jackpots, Jr. High and High School rodeos, and much more, running consistently in the 1D Youth and 2D Open. Teagan has now moved on to another horse and we have brought Roux home to become a part of the broodmare band. She will be bred for the first time in 2024.

KNM Jo Jo Array is a heavy boned, heavier muscled mare. She is out of Mister Tackadial, one of our previous stallions, whose daughters all cross extremely well on both Mister Blue Tailwind and Playboys Blue Pine. Her colts should all be the go-to when pulling bulls from the pasture or entering the heading box.

KNM Tutu Tango, better known as "Lola" was Nikki's main ranch horse from 2018-2023. She was the horse that got me back into competition at local shows, obstacle challenges and Top Hand Cowgirl Challenges, finishing Reserve Champion in the Spring of 2023. She is entering the broodmare band in 2024 to replace her mother, Tailwind Tango, who was a top producer in our herd for many years.

I met Bob Patten many years ago at a Craig Cameron horsemanship clinic. He was such an interesting man, loved to talk horse pedigrees, and had an eye for a good one. We had the opportunity to purchase a mare he raised who seemed to fit our type and she is working out well. With Orphan Drift, Irish Pay, Paddys Irish Whiskey, and Mr Sun O Lena right on her papers. We have crossed her on Playboy and are very happy with the results.

KNM Dashing Marita was sold in the 2020 Dakota 50/50 sale and later lost her left eye. We were able to trade for a full sister and brought her back home to be a broodmare. It is just sickening that she wasn't ridden and shown because she is drop dead gorgeous and should have been a ranch horse versatility prospect. As she is a daughter of Mister Blue Tailwind and a maternal granddaughter of Playboys Blue Pine, she is bred to outside studs. She was bred for the first time in 2023 to Boons a Little Blue, a stallion owned by our friends, Darrel and Rose Manning, We really appreciate the conformation of this young stallion and are anxious to see how this cross turns out. We will breed her the same way in 2024.

KNM McCumber Melania is named after the most beautiful woman in the world, and it fits. We have owned every mare in this maternal pedigree, starting with Poco Tonya purchased when I was in elementary school over 40 years ago. There is a reason they are still here. Melania's mother McCumber Mattie was my healing horse and main ranch horse for many years until we retired her to domestic duty and she produced some outstanding foals, including the 2018 Dakota 50/50 AQHA Ranch Horse Versatility Reserve Champion and ND Reining Futurity Champion, KNM McCumber Rose. Melania was ridden for a short time, but we knew we wanted her in the broodmare band to replace her aging mother as soon as possible. She will be bred for the first time in 2024.

We are lucky to have DRM Playgirls Belle! When I was 5 or 6 years old I bought my very first broodmare, a red roan filly named Bella Blue Whippet from my dad - we even set up a ledger (long before computers and spreadsheets, so that I could make regular payments and calculate my interest. At one time we had four daughters of this mare in our broodmare band, and they were tremendous producers. When I realized that I was down to just one or two mares that went back to my original, I started to panic and was lucky enough that good friends offered me an opportunity to purchase a filly from one of their Bella Blue Whippet great granddaughters. She will be bred for the first time in 2024.
