Last weekend KNM Reggie Blue was honored as the Horse of the Year at the TR 4 Heart and Soul‘s fundraising event, Blue Jean and Black Tie Affair. This program has been the dream of Katie Brock Oakland and is a true gift to the Bismarck/Mandan community. Katie’s husband Brock is a rockstar behind the scenes and their three kids share their own skills with the participants of this program every day. This is the most selfless family! Katie has extended these opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to the entire region as she has mentored others to start additional programs, as well as teaching in NHSC’s Equine Program. ![]()
I have been reflecting on this award…First, the successes of any horse is directly related to the opportunities that he has been given to perform, or to serve. Greta Samuelson deserves a lot of credit for purchasing him as a baby, training and showing him and developing him to maturity. When she was finished, Perry Thomas and Barb recognized his potential as a therapeutic riding mount. ![]()
As a breeder of ranch and rope horses, we are always trying to produce a better horse – more cowy, more versatile, more fit for competition in some way – and the reward is often counted by success in the arena or the reports of a happy client. But today, I am finding myself reflecting on the unique relationship between horse and horseman – something that many of you have experienced personally, and like me, often take for granted. That thrill of a great ride, the interdependency and partnership you have with the horse in a competitive environment or doctoring calves in the pasture, and the profound comfort we find in them during some of the most intense emotional times in our lives. And it makes me very proud of Reggie, and all of the therapeutic riding horses, to know that he has been able to replicate that relationship with the participants of this program in a way that provides them that thrill, partnership, or comfort, and gives them relief from their pain, anxiety, or grief for even an hour at a time. ![]()
Thank you TR 4 Heart and Soul for giving Reggie this opportunity and purpose. Proud of you Reggie Blue!
