Medalen Angus & Quarter Horse Ranch

Medalen Angus & Quarter Horse Ranch is located 6 miles north of Towner, ND. The Mouse River runs through our home quarter.
We feel very blessed to raise cattle and horses and to be able to see them for use in other ranching operations.

About Us

Our cow herd has grown from what started as an FFA project. Three heifer calves were purchased from Harold Tastad in December of 1980. Additional females were purchased from several sources over the next ten years. All cattle were sold by private treaty until 2008 when we had our first open house bull sale.

Nikki’s family has been raising Quarter Horses since 1969, focusing on moderately framed ranch horses that are trainable, athletic and pretty enough for the show pen. As AQHA Ranch Heritage Breeders it is important to us that our horses are used in all aspects of ranching, rodeo and in the show arena, assuring that while we hold true to their Foundation bloodlines, we are keeping up with modern uses and proving their talents. Nikki became an AQHA Director in February of 2023.

Our operation is located on very sandy soil, but with a high water table. Normal annual rainfall for this area is 15″. When we get enough rain or snow we have the ability to raise a lot of grass and hay. A normal year allows us to graze from May 15 to November 15. We try to graze as long as possible each year and some year’s get to December 10th.

Last weekend KNM Reggie Blue was honored as the Horse of the Year at the TR 4 Heart and Soul‘s fundraising event, Blue Jean and Black Tie Affair. This program has been the dream of Katie Brock Oakland and is a true gift to the Bismarck/Mandan community. Katie’s husband Brock is a rockstar behind the scenes and their three kids share their own skills with the participants of this program every day. This is the most selfless family! Katie has extended these opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to the entire region as she has mentored others to start additional programs, as well as teaching in NHSC’s Equine Program. I have been reflecting on this award…First, the successes of any horse is directly related to the opportunities that he has been given to perform, or to serve. Greta Samuelson deserves a lot of credit for purchasing him as a baby, training and showing him and developing him to maturity. When she was finished, Perry Thomas and Barb recognized his potential as a therapeutic riding mount. As a breeder of ranch and rope horses, we are always trying to produce a better horse – more cowy, more versatile, more fit for competition in some way – and the reward is often counted by success in the arena or the reports of a happy client. But today, I am finding myself reflecting on the unique relationship between horse and horseman – something that many of you have experienced personally, and like me, often take for granted. That thrill of a great ride, the interdependency and partnership you have with the horse in a competitive environment or doctoring calves in the pasture, and the profound comfort we find in them during some of the most intense emotional times in our lives. And it makes me very proud of Reggie, and all of the therapeutic riding horses, to know that he has been able to replicate that relationship with the participants of this program in a way that provides them that thrill, partnership, or comfort, and gives them relief from their pain, anxiety, or grief for even an hour at a time. Thank you TR 4 Heart and Soul for giving Reggie this opportunity and purpose. Proud of you Reggie Blue! See MoreSee Less
